This is a pretty performant approach as you only need to render one mesh per chunk instead of a lot of blocks. Using chunking, Minecraft would group a bunch of blocks into a chunk and then calculate which faces that players can see and then only render those faces as one giant mesh. One of the things to consider is how to generate the voxel world. The first time that comes to mind of a voxel world is obviously Minecraft. I want it to be tiled based and I want it to be 3d, so the first time to do is to generate a voxel world. I think it’s about time to start on this colony simulator. So I’ve been spending the last few months learning Unreal Engine 4 in order to do so, and I’ve learned quite a bit. I’ve always wanted to make a colony simulator like Dwarf Fortress or Rimworld.
